Imber Court Swimming Lesson FAQs
-
At GoggleSquad, we believe in being fully transparent about pricing.
You’ll always find our lesson prices clearly listed on our website – unlike many swim schools! We want parents to understand not just what they’re paying for, but the value it delivers.
Our goal is to help children make steady, confident progress, rather than staying stuck at the same stage for years.
Smaller Classes Make a Difference
Education and behavioural science consistently show that smaller groups lead to faster, more effective learning. In swimming, that means children in a class of 4 engage more and make quicker progress than those in a class of 8–10.
Just as importantly, smaller classes mean more teacher attention for each learner:
In our classes (max. 4 children up to Stage 5), a learner receives around 25% of the teacher’s focus.
In a typical leisure centre class of 8 children (Stage 1), it would be about 12.5%.
By Stage 3, leisure centre classes often rise to 10–12 learners, meaning each child may get only around 8–10% of the teacher’s attention.
At GoggleSquad, your child gets 2x more teacher attention than in a Stage 1 leisure centre class of eight children - and up to 2.5x more compared with Stage 3 classes of 10–12 children.
Mistakes are corrected sooner, confidence grows faster and children are far less likely to get stuck. Smaller groups also make it possible to group children of similar ability - something that’s almost impossible in classes of 8-12 learners, where some children inevitably get left behind while others aren’t challenged.
Quality of Teaching & Support
It isn’t only about class size - the quality of teaching is just as important:
Teachers in the water: Our teachers are always in the pool, offering hands-on support and reassurance. At leisure centres, teachers are typically on poolside only.
Professional accountability: Every GoggleSquad teacher is supported by highly experienced managers, who monitor lessons, provide training, and ensure consistently high standards.
Experienced and valued staff: We pay our teachers more, helping us attract and retain excellent instructors.
Clear communication: Unlike many swim schools, we don’t hide behind booking systems and emails. We ask important questions, observe children closely and make sure every class placement is right. If it’s not, we make changes. Parents can always reach us - we respond quickly to every email, call, and message.
It’s Worth It
Our lessons cost more per session than the leisure centre but the real value is in the speed and quality of progress. Smaller classes mean better-matched lessons, more individual attention and a better swimming experience overall. Children often need fewer terms to reach their goals, saving families both time and frustration in the long run.
Investment in People and the Pool
Keeping class sizes small requires investment, especially as the costs of running a pool have risen sharply in recent years. Imber Court’s pricing had fallen behind and we want to put that right to ensure that we can invest in the facility itself.
We’re not just investing to keep classes small: we’re also appointing a dedicated Swim Manager (Taya, one of our superstars, is being promoted), investing in training, professional cleaning, new technology for parents and teachers, pool repairs, online chemical monitoring and proper back-office support. These are the foundations of a high-quality swim school - and they ensure families get the service and standards they deserve.

At Imber Court we have a No Spectators Policy for safety and learning reasons. Poolside space is limited, and keeping it clear ensures lifeguards have full visibility and reduces risks. It also helps children focus on their teacher without distractions, so they make faster progress. If a child needs the toilet, one of our two lifeguards will escort them and fetch a parent if needed.
-
Food and drink consumption is prohibited in the swimming pool area and changing rooms.
-
Swimsuits, towels, and goggles are recommended. We provide swim aids and everything else!
-
Lessons typically last 30 minutes for children though some lessons are 45 minutes long.
-
We operate a strict double nappy policy, which means we insist on a swim nappy and additional neoprene nappy over the top for babies and toddlers. If a child is not toilet trained or you there is a risk that there could be a 'leak' then it's the parent or carer's responsibility to ensure that a child is adequately protected.
This is an absolute non-negotiable condition of using our services. If a child turns up to swimming and is not in the appropriate nappy combo, they will not be able to participate in their lesson.

Small group lessons as standard
At GoggleSquad we only offer small group swimming lessons to ensure learners get the time and attention they need. Lessons are tailored to meet learners’ needs so they can they develop the fundamental skills required to become a competent and safe swimmer. This focussed individualised approach to lessons gets great results.
Baby and toddler swimming lessons
The first year of a child’s life is a key stage for introducing them to how their body moves and feels in the water.
Because swimming pools can seem overwhelming to very young children, it’s important that they feel safe and in control. For this reason, we recommend that a parent or carer remains in the pool with their child until at least the age of three.
Instructors also play a vital role by recognising and responding to a child’s non-verbal signals. Equally, supporting parents to understand these cues helps build a child’s confidence and enjoyment in the water, which leads to stronger progress.
Our early years lessons are shaped by guidance from leading professional bodies, including the Swimming Teachers’ Association (STA), Aqua Sensory, and Aqua Education. This ensures our programme is comprehensive, up-to-date, and designed with young learners in mind.
It’s all about the play!
Our baby and toddler sessions are packed with sensory experiences, designed to stimulate young minds and support overall development. Sensory play encourages body awareness, coordination, and confidence, while also nurturing emotional wellbeing both in the water and beyond.
We like to spark imagination during lessons by weaving in themes from familiar stories and shows, such as The Gruffalo, Paw Patrol, or Octonauts. Broader ideas like “space adventures,” “a trip to the shops,” or “pirate quests” also help keep activities fun and engaging.
To support specific skills, we introduce buoyancy aids. These can help children practise balance, body alignment, breathing control, strength, and different ways of moving through the water.
From the earliest stages, our priority is to get children comfortable with two core abilities: floating on both the back and the front, and breathing in the water (blowing bubbles with the face submerged). Mastering these foundations is essential before moving on to swimming strokes..
Preschool swimming lessons
Our swimming lessons for preschool children aged from around three to four years old, are focussed on developing the key water skills that underpin all swimming strokes.
When they get to this age most children are stronger and able to take instructions. They are generally ready to focus on specific activities and skills such as balance, buoyancy, rotation, aquatic breathing and propulsion with their arms and legs - the building blocks for learning to swim.
School-age swimming lessons
We use the Swim England Learn To Swim Framework for school-aged children (stages 1-7).
With learners whose technique needs improving we will often go back to basics to ensure the fundamentals are in place before putting their stroke back together. For this age group we adopt an in and out of the water approach which offers a full 360 degree view of progress. In the pool the instructor can observe and correct a child in the moment whilst from the poolside they benefit from the bird’s eye view offered by an elevated vantage point.
Adult swimming lessons
Whether you’re one of 14 million adults in the UK who can’t swim or are looking to improve your swimming skills, our adult swimming lessons are an effective way to get great results.
With expert guidance from our highly qualified swimming instructors, you will master the important fundamentals of swimming and boost your confidence and ability in the water.
