Getting Started With GoggleSquad
-
Children can start learning to swim with GoggleSquad from as young as six weeks old. There’s more information about this topic in our advice article. We teach Baby and Toddler lessons in our Walton and Claygate venues. To enquire about places for babies, please email hello@gogglesquad.co.uk.
-
We divide our lessons into two broad categories: GoggleTots for pre-schoolers and GoggleSquad Academy for school-age children. The place we offer will be based on their age and ability. And the lessons we offers across our venues vary due to the different facilities. For example, our East Molesey pool is better suited to younger learners. The best place to start us to submit and enquiry via a form or to email our brilliant lesson managers via hello@gogglesquad.co.uk.
-
You can fill out a form on the website, email our brilliant swimming lesson managers via hello@gogglesquad.co.uk or call 01372 613032. After getting in touch, we'll discuss a learners’ needs with you and may suggest an assessment. We want to place learners in the right class based on their skill level. If we have a place, we'll provide you with all the info. If we don’t, you can be added to our waiting list. Once a suitable place is identified, you’ll be invited to register on the learner portal for lesson confirmation, dates, times, venue and instructor details.
-
Once you’ve been invited to register, you’ll be ask to complete our registration form which asks for parent details (the bill payer), which include your name and address, email address and mobile phone number, as well as photo consent and emergency contact details. You will also be required to add learner details using the button ‘Add child’. You will also be asked to chose a password to use to access the Learner Portal.
-
Where needed and if possible, we will assess a child in the water, but generally we place a child in a class following a detailed discussion with their parent. We’ll then make sure we are satisfied that they in the right group at a comparable level - and if not, will look at placing them in a more suitable group.
-
We don’t offer trial lessons but we do, where necessary and possible, offer an in-water assessment to ensure that we are placing a learner in an appropriate group.
-
If there is no suitable space available, we can add you to our waiting list and contact you as soon as a suitable class opens up.
-
Yes, enrolment is open year-round.
-
We operate three terms per year. Term 1: September to Christmas holidays; Term 2: January to Easter holidays; Term 3: After Easter to the Summer holidays. We split each term into two blocks for the purposes of payment. See our Term Dates page for specific information about lesson dates at each of our venues.
About our Swimming Lessons
-
Swimming lessons are 30 minutes long. Our Swim Club sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Notre Dame School are an hour long.
-
We don’t allow armbands because they tend to hinder rather than help. While they may provide a sense of security, armbands hold children in an unnatural position, often keeping their arms out of the water and making it harder to learn correct body position and technique.
Instead, we use a range of teaching aids like floats, noodles, and games that support children safely while encouraging proper movement and confidence in the water. Our instructors are trained to build water confidence gradually, so children feel safe while learning to swim with the right technique from the very start.
-
Swimming lessons for children during term time are almost exclusively in small groups, though we do offer private one-to-one lessons during the school holidays in our intensive crash courses, and for adult learners.
-
At least once a week is sufficient to see progress. As with any form of learning, consistency is key, so we love it when children attend their weekly lesson regularly and don’t miss too many lessons.
-
Unfortunately, we are unable to defer lessons. Should a learner take a holiday during a block which results in lesson(s) being missed, you will still be charged in full. Their place will be retained on the course for the block that has been paid for in advance. If you do not pay for an upcoming block of lessons in advance, your place on the course will be given to someone on our waiting list.
-
Swimwear, towel and goggles. For school-age learners swimming hats are mandatory, with long hair tied back. We supply all equipment required for lessons.
-
We operate a very strict double nappy policy, which means we insist on a swim nappy and additional neoprene nappy over the top for babies and toddlers. If you think there is a risk that this could happen with your child, then please take the appropriate steps to ensure there is no risk of 'leakage'. This is an absolute non-negotiable condition of using our services. If a child turns up to swimming and is not in the appropriate nappy combo, they will not be able to participate in their lesson. Under no circumstances should regular nappies be worn while swimming.
-
We enforce a strict policy prohibiting filming and photography at our swim school. This rule is in place to protect the privacy and safety of all children in our lessons, and it is non-negotiable. No filming or photography is permitted anywhere on the poolside or anywhere else at our venues. If any person is seen taking photos or recording videos, or if this is reported to us and verified, they will be permanently banned from our swim school with immediate effect. No refunds will be issued to anyone removed for breaching this policy. We take this extremely seriously and will enforce it without exception. We appreciate the cooperation of the vast majority of our parents and guardians in respecting this essential rule.
-
We cannot accept responsibility for any personal belongings lost or left behind at our swimming venues. Please ensure that all items - especially swimwear, towels, goggles, and bags - are clearly labelled with your child’s name.
Any items found by our instructors when they sweep at the end of a session will be placed in the venue’s lost property box where available.
Unclaimed items will be disposed of at the end of each term block. We recommend taking all belongings home immediately after each lesson to avoid loss.
-
Yes, generally you’re able to watch lessons from the poolside but please note, we have a strict policy of limiting attendance to one parent/guardian per learner to avoid overcrowding.
-
One-to-one and smaller classes allow for more attention and better instruction and support. We therefore strive to limit group lessons to no more than three or four learners to one teacher.
-
We welcome children with special educational needs and work closely with parents to understand a child’s individual needs to ensure we can support them effectively with their lessons. At present, we’re unable to cater for children with physical disabilities that require specialist equipment, as we rent pool facilities and don’t have full control over accessibility features. We’re always happy to have a conversation to see whether we’re a good fit and to recommend alternative options if needed.
-
We like consistency, so strive to ensure that learners have the same instructor every week. Invariably, this can change if an instructor is off sick, in which case we organise a cover teacher and a detailed handover so that that the cover teacher has all the information they need. Sometimes teachers have holidays or emergencies for which we arrange cover in the same way. Generally, we do this as a last resort and we always aim to communicate this before the lesson.
-
This isn’t uncommon, particularly at the start when everything is new and unfamiliar. Our instructors are trained to gently help children build confidence. We generally persevere as we know that most children tend to settle as they become more comfortable in their surroundings, but we’ll never continue with a lesson if a child is in distress and can’t settle. We’re always happy to have a debrief after a lesson to discuss our approach and to get input from parents or carers. in our experience, more children enjoy and look forward to GoggleSquad swimming lessons than don’t!
-
Yes, adult lessons are available for all levels. We teach adult lessons at our Cobham Notre Dame venue.
-
No, our adult classes cater for all levels and learners are placed with others at a similar level to ensure lessons are optimal for all!
-
We do our best to ensure learners are alongside others at a similar stage of their swimming journey so that classes are tailored to their needs, allowing them to consistently build up their skills with every lesson. If we think your child would be better suited to an alternative group once their lessons have started, we’ll discuss this with you promptly.
-
Yes, all of our instructors have experience teaching young children. We also have early years specialists who have deeper experience teaching babies and toddlers.
Learner Progress and Development
-
Progress varies and can be affected by many factors. Age, water comfort, and lesson frequency all play a role so we’re afraid there’s no easy answer to this question. It depends! We’ve written an article on this topic titled How Long Does It Take A Child To Learn How To Swim?
-
We’ll provide updates at the end of each half-term lesson block in the learner portal. There you can monitor progress in line with the Swim England Learn to Swim Framework to assess and track key learning milestones. We also make time at the end of each term block for parents to discuss progress. You can also discuss it with the lesson coordinators in the office at any time via hello@gogglesquad.co.uk.
-
The Learner Portal is dedicated software called Swimphony that helps us to manage memberships, bookings and progression of learners in their swimming lessons. Additionally, it lets us automate some communications and billing, meaning we have more time to spend on what we do best - teaching swimming! Parents and participants can view lesson information, learner progression and and payment information.
-
We follow the excellent Swim England Learn To Swim Framework to deliver lessons for school-aged children. It has key milestones called stages and once a learner completes a stage, they are awarded a certificate. We give certificates at the end of each term for achievement milestones related to the Learn to Swim Framework.
Payment and Policies
-
Payments are made in advance by Direct Debit for each half-term. Fees are charged to the card entered into the Learner Portal and cover lessons in the upcoming half-term block. We notify you via email in advance, stating the amount and dates the payment covers.
-
Payment is due one month before the block begins. For example, if the half-term block starts on 9th January, payment will be taken on 9th December.
-
If you have enrolled a new learner and decide to cancel their place, we require at least one months’ notice.
For existing learners, if you wish to cancel, this must be done one month prior to the half-term block ending, otherwise payment will be taken.
If you wish to change a booking, please contact us and we will do our best to accommodate, but this cannot be guaranteed.
-
We don't offer refunds or 'catch ups' for lessons missed. We place learners in groups that are right for their level which means we don't have spare capacity. We incur costs regardless of whether a learner is present or not, so we are firm on this policy so we can continue to offer great lessons! Where lessons are cancelled by us due to circumstances beyond our control like power cuts, adverse weather or disasters, or as a result of a requirement to follow government guidance, a credit or alternative date for the lesson(s) will be offered. The same applies if there is an issue affecting the pool or venue which means that lessons cannot take place.
-
We are unable to reschedule missed lessons unless we have cancelled the lessons - in which case we may be able to offer an additional date at the end of the term block. If we are unable to do so, we will credit you back for the lesson.
-
Unfortunately, we do not offer catch-up lessons to make up for lessons missed as our costs are incurred whether or not a learner attends. Catch-up lessons are disruptive to the normal running of established classes and classes are generally fully booked.
-
Make-up lessons are not offered unless we cancel the session.
-
Occasionally, yes. Please contact us to see if there are any current offers.
-
Where possible, we aim to accommodate siblings in concurrent sessions though this cannot be guaranteed.
-

-
Refunds and credits will not be given if a learner is unable to take part in a lesson due to sickness.
